The National Committee for a Free Germany (Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland, or NKFD) was a German anti-Nazi organization that operated in the Soviet Union during World War II.
At the wishes of the majority of the anti-communist ideologically oriented German officers to meet, as the red- white-black flag of the German Reich was the emblem of the NKFD . Added was the inscription Freies Deutschland (Free Germany) in black fracture letters. Initially it was thought the black-red-gold flag of the Weimar Republic as a liberal symbol. This was not at the communists and liberals liking. It also adopted the old "Bismarck" - flag for the committee. That was also a "German flag dispute" in the war prison camps in the Soviet Union.
See Wikipedia articles: National Committee for a Free Germany
and Nationalkomitee Freies Deutschland ("Vorgeschichte", last clause).
